Just on bus home. Great result. Everyone put in a shift
Re: MDT Leeds v Newcastle
What I found interesting today was Newcastle looked like they were going to press the fuck out of us in the first few minutes but we just went long, bypassing the press. Nmecha did a great job fighting their defence for these balls. As our midfield were so physical (all 6 footers) we were winning second balls and 50/50s. This wasn't simply a reactionary measure from the Arsenal defeat (more on this later), we were actually very well-drilled to play this way. This meant Newcastle had to back off a bit as they had to ensure they had enough players deep enough to help the defence for when we won these duels. This in turn meant we then had more time to play out from the back when we saw fit. A good combination of going long and short.
I think Newcastle looked a bit confused today. They couldn't get going at all first half, and it was down to us. Our tactics determined how that game went, rather than Newcastle just having an off day.
If DCL gets up to speed (a better Nmecha basically), and we add a difference-maker to the wing (preferably a set piece taker who can also play in the 10 for games where we have that luxury) we will be a handy team in this league.
I think Buononotte fit the profile above (as did El Khannouss), so hopefully we have similar profiles on our radar to try get over the line before the deadline. Then he can take over set piece duty, leaving our giant CMs, CBs and striker to attack them. Goals will come.
As with every season under Farke and the 49ers so far, August always looks a bit concerning and things dont really seem clear or start to take shape til after the first international break. Therefore, the fact we have 4 points already is very promising, and we will only improve as we kick into gear (as always under this regime). This is why I didn't see the point worrying after Arsenal and the cup game. Was way too premature. If we're shit in September then I'll worry. Pretty confident we won't be though.
Farke said today he wanted to start Nmecha v Arsenal but he wasn't 100% fit. This also helps join the dots. Pointless playing long to Piroe, so we unfortunately were lambs to the slaughter against a world class press. Everton were more defensive so we built out from the back more and controlled possession, therefore Piroe's weakness wasn't much of an issue. Not a dig at Piroe BTW, it's just not his game.
Anyway, 3 games in and we've learned there will be tactical versatility. We'll most likely be more direct v the better teams, and it seems the Arsenal shit show was more a case of hands being tied than tactical naivety.
Farke and the 49ers always have a plan and it's starting to become clearer at the usual time.
