Tbf we've hardly been blessed with decent youngsters in recent times, apart from Archie who Farke played and trusted. Though Cresswell had a lot of potential and shouldn't have been sold for peanuts. I know there were issues between him and Farke but Farke should've found a way to sort it. Should never have been sold. When he was 18 he played a game v West Ham and had Antonio in his pocket. Was clear the lad was a talent.
The problem was 2-fold. Charlie didn’t want another loan & he also wasn’t willing to play backup to anymore.
And as Rick says, our U21s aren’t exactly brimming with talent at the moment. Season he left Debayo was named in the squad for the season. Remember him? Dropped off the radar after we won promotion, joined Hull mid season last year and has now gone on loan to Swindon for the season.
I do think we can get a bit rose tinted about the academy. 94 had a decent batch, 96 was unbelievable, a once in a generation batch. Since that lot we’ve had Milner, Lennon, Delph.
Biggest problem we have is that we’ve been preyed upon for last 20 years by likes of Chelsea & now Man City who hoover up talent on an industrial scale. Whereas Chelsea signed them at 16/17 and then loaned out dozens, City do it at schoolboy level.
Most notable one recently was Gorman who City paid a lot of money for. At 15. But they’ve had others off us over the last 3/4 years. You just don’t read about them. And the money offered to kids at 14/15 is obscene.
We haven’t had the luxury of blooding youngsters over last few seasons because there’s been so much on the line. Even when we were ‘safe’ this season, every game still meant something because every place in the table is worth a few extra million. The difference between 14th & 15th alone is worth 7m.
